#705 Glycerine & Rose Water Serum

The combination of glycerine with rose water is a “traditional” skin tonic.  Several recipes appear in the Encyclopaedia of Practical Receipts and Processes by William B Dick, published in 1872, so there is evidence that the combination was in use the first part of Queen Victoria’s reign.

There are many recorded recipes comprising just the two ingredients.  Only the proportions of the ingredients vary between recipes.  I have settled on two versions.  The Skin Tonic has a smaller proportion of glycerine to rose water, and is intended as a general purpose skin tonic for regular use.  This version has a much higher proportion of glycerine.  You can apply it directly to skin that needs extra care, or you can put a couple of drops on a finger tip to massage where needed.  I keep a 30 ml stock bottle and decant it into 10 ml dropper bottles for use.

When you make this serum, the rose water and glycerine will form separate layers until you shake them up together.  Glycerine is denser than water, with a a Specific Gravity of around 1.2 g/ml.

Ingredients:
    • 22 ml rose water
    • 8 ml food grade glycerine.
Method:

Put the ingredients in a glass bottle and securely close the bottle.  Shake to mix the liquids.

It really is that easy!
